Theology in sixth grade begins with the study of what Divine Revelation is, and then focuses on Salvation History through the Old Testament. Students will regularly read, reflect on, and consider the interpretation of Scriptural passages. There is also a focus on prayer and liturgy by studying elements of Catholic worship and practicing different forms of prayer.
The Language Arts portion of class consists of writing, grammar and vocabulary. Writing is comprised of creative writing, research writing, and essays. Grammar includes understanding the different types of sentences, correct use of punctuation and the correct use of all parts of speech. Vocabulary is used for not only the expansion of word choices, but also the development of strong study skills/test preparation. The Literature portion of this class includes the study of the different genres of literature: fiction, nonfiction, short stories, and poetry.
Social Studies concentrates on ancient empires of Meso-America, South America, Greece and Rome.
Sixth grade students explore Math concepts such as fractions, decimals, expressions and equations, geometry, data and probability.
In sixth grade, students are introduced to lab safety and begin to learn about the nature of science and good experimental design. Students grow in scientific literacy and have opportunities to reflect on whether scientific claims are credible and reliable. They learn science and engineering practices while studying astronomy, ecology, photosynthesis, and waves. Favorite sixth grade labs include an investigation into photosynthesis, an ecological observational study, and a stations lab investigating the properties of waves. Sixth graders are tested on the Indiana Science ILEARN test.
7th grade continues the focus on Scripture through prayerful study of the Gospels, including participation in the Living Stations of the Cross. They then study the moral and sacramental aspects of the Christian life. Our students prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation throughout their seventh grade year with academic work, intentional development of their prayer life, and a preparatory retreat.
Seventh grade continues and enhances previous standards, and concentrates on PreAlgebra with a transition into Algebra. The year also includes an emphasis on Geometry.
